21 day Running Challenge

Hi my name is Yvette and I’m overweight. There, I said it. Now I can move on.

It’s amazing how one’s weight can affect almost every part of one’s life. I feel it the most when I’m around other people. I imagine people commenting how tight my clothes are, or how attractive I could be if I just looked after myself. I must say since I’ve been better mentally, the negative thoughts haven’t really infiltrated my head as heavily as they did before.

But being fat still sucks.

I have boxes of old clothes that are (way) too small for me now but I so badly yearn to be fit into them.  I hear you say, “throw ’em out then.” But no. They all have sentimental value. Plus, I used to look hot in them. One day, they’ll be vintage and in fashion again. I just don’t know if my body will be in fashion again.

Most of the times I feel the weight of my weight when I’m around my children. They’re so busy, and I can’t always move like they do or keep up with them. I’d like to get to a fitness level where I have a fighting chance of playing with for more than 10 minutes without panting to get the few words out, “OK, mommy is tired now.”

I decided to embark on a running (read that as walking) challenge. Everyday, just a walk down the road or around my block. I want to do it early in the morning because I don’t really want people to see me breathe heavily (*giggle*). I used to be a dancer, believe it or not, but even then I felt fat- no matter how hard I trained, I felt bigger than I was. When I was around 12, I used to sit and stare at my thighs. I’d poke and prod at the “fat”. It was all in my head. I was poking at muscle.

Anyway, that’s in the past. Looking forward now.

Come on Yvette.

You can do this.

I have lost a bit of weight after changing medication but I still have a lot more to lose. I’m currently a size 40. I’ve changed to eating low carb meals so I’m hoping that will help. I’ve also noted what situations make me what to pour chocolate down my throat. I try to avoid those times. I have running gear, 2 x 2 kg weights and a skipping rope. I have all my shit together.

I have to do this.

Any advice?

Yvette

I’ve been trying to get myself motivated to steer walking/running as well! I think it might be a good idea to set a specific time every day, or every second day, to go for your walk. That’s what I’m going to do from next week, when the kids go back to school.

I’ll let you know how it goes 😜

Similar here… My fat loss routine consists in walking my daughter to school. That’s 1 hr 30 minutes every day! I can’t run, because my weight combined with my hypermobility means I just can’t, but I noticed that if when you walk you tighten your bum muscles, your leg muscles, in short, try walking tightening everything: it’s like going to the gym! A beautiful woman I once met who was incredibly fit said that, actually, the best exercise you can do is walk with your tummy pulled in. So yeah, if you do that, you’ll walk a little funny, like a stick has been… well, you know what I mean. But it works! I feel firmer already, and it’s a good pain, the sort of pain you get from exercising muscles you normally don’t. All without running. Also if you do it, it will naturally make you walk faster. It’s funny really.
    Good luck! xx

1h30 mins is bloody far! I take my hat off to you!!!

I took your advice and decided to walk like that. Damn I looked and felt weird

I did some stomach tightening and bum tightening exercises today. Whoop whoop. It reminded me of the time I was young and super fit. Ah nostalgia you bastard.

      Thanks for the advice.

Good luck with your journey. Let me know how it goes 🙂 I’m planning to post a picture of myself one birthday coming up soon to show if this exercising this made a dent, so to speak.

      Xxx

Over the years I managed to lose and keep off 20 pounds (I’ve gotten my weight down more than my current weight and plan to lose a few more pounds from where I am now). It takes time. I found Weight Watchers helpful. Weight Watchers offers in-person and online support groups. (MyFitnessPal.com offers a free online calorie counter.) Reducing carbs (especially bread and sweets) helps me. Basically, do what works. Wishing you the best.

You go girl! A low carb diet worked well for me. Park in the farthest park bay at the grocery store, that way you get some extra steps in for the day. If you have to wait for something – pace, its better than sitting. I do those little things, don’t really know if they make a difference but I believe anything other than sitting is excellent. I walk around the block, one day a week – that way I don’t set myself up to fail. I mean, one day? There’s no way I can talk my way outta that 🙂

      🙂

All those things sound doable Pieces. Ta.

I just hate that milk is a carb- I got so used to drinking milk in my coffee that it’s hard not to do it anymore lol. Do you bant? I’m trying to find the diet that works for my lifestyle. With the kids it’s so hard to find something that I don’t have to cook two sets of food. Maybe I’m just lazy. I can’t blame bipolar anymore. Dammit.

I like your thinking re: walking. I have a very small block so I’ll walk around twice. Like a boss. Like I climbed Everest.

I just hope this fat goes Pieces. I just miss old me. Xx
